A few miles north of Hakodate is Onuma Quasi National Park. It’s called “quasi” because it’s technically not a national park but everyone acts like it is. The park is comprised of a pair of very scenic lakes with forested islands. To the north the volcano of Mt Komagatake watches over the area. A number of pleasant walking trails can be found at Onuma Park, including some that are connected to the islands in the lake by small bridges. I would end up visiting Onuma Park a second time as I made my way from Hokkaido up to Sapporo because I wanted to get a better shot of Mt Komagatake from across the lake. It only takes about 45 minutes to reach Onuma Park from Hakodate so if the weather is good and you’ve got some space time is definitely a worthwhile day trip.
