Not far from Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond is the former site of a castle and palace that is slowly being excavated. The palace was called Wolseong, which roughly means “Half Moon”, and the name comes from the fact that it was built on the bend of a river. It is though that the fortress here was first built sometime in the first century AD though it was likely abandoned sometime around when Korea’s Silla Kingdom collapsed. Today it’s a large park area but you can tell where the walls used to be. A couple of dig sites can be found in the park but it looks like it will be many years before excavation is complete.
