Three times I have traveled to Europe, and all three times the local bird population has seen fit to bestow me with gifts of their excrement. In 2012 while in Venice a bit of bird poop fell out of the sky onto my arm. In 2015 while in Barcelona a bird flew right past me and dropped a tiny piece of poop on my head. In 2018 a bird pooped on the arm of my jacket, though I’m not exactly sure when and where it happened because I didn’t notice it until towards the end of the trip. My best guess is that it was once again in Venice since that city is notorious for bird poop, but whatever the case it’s clear that the pigeons and seagulls of Europe have far less respect for me than their counterparts in Japan and Korea.
