Over the years I’ve had a few people ask me if I had any interest in visiting Australia or New Zealand. While the thought has briefly crossed my mind it’s something I’ve never seriously considered. Visiting one or both countries would mean I’d be able to say that I’ve been in both hemispheres of this planet and since they’re both English-speaking nations there (theoretically) wouldn’t be a language barrier. I’ve met plenty of Australian people over the years, and a small number of New Zealanders, and they’ve all been friendly so I don’t have any reason to believe that I wouldn’t be able to get along with the locals. Perhaps the reason I’ve never really thought about visiting is that I simply don’t know a lot about Australia or New Zealand and what kinds of things there would be for me to see and do if I went down there. Then again, maybe another reason that I’ve not had much of an interest in Australia in particular is that when I think of that country I think of things like giant spiders, venomous snakes, and all sorts of other deadly wildlife. When I think of New Zealand I think of sheep and The Lord of the Rings movies, which isn’t necessary bad but probably isn’t too flattering to the locals. I suppose at some point in the future I just need to take the time to do some research on both nations and see if I find anything interesting about them. Any journey to Australia and/or New Zealand is at least a year or two away since my next travel goal is a return trip to Japan and/or Korea but who knows, maybe one day I’ll go there.
