While walking around Gyeongju you’ll no doubt notice that there are a lot of small hills throughout the town. These are actually burial mounds from back when Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Kingdom and they house the remains of Korea royals and nobles. Many burial mounds are fenced-off from the public but a few are out in the open. Climbing the burial mounds is illegal, however, so be sure to stand at least a couple feet back from them.
