In the late afternoon I arrived on Sesoko Island, which would be my home base for exploring the northern part of Okinawa. After getting settled in at my guesthouse I drove over to the west side of the island to visit Sesoko Beach. Thick, dark clouds covered the sky that evening, so there would be no sunset on the beach for me that day. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the clouds were actually the trailing edge of a super typhoon that at that very moment was pounding the Japanese mainland. Although I didn’t get to see the sun go down on the ocean that evening it was still nice to be on the beach and experience those last few moments of light as the waves gently lapped against the shore.
