Today may be April Fool’s Day but this post is no prank. Being the first day of the month, I’ve updated this website’s header image again and for the month of April I’m featuring a photo from Onuma Park in Japan. I think the proper way to write Onuma Park in Japanese is 大沼公園 but I could be wrong. Located in the southwestern part of the island of Hokkaido, Onuma Park is about 30 minutes north of the town of Hakodate and is definitely a place worth visiting if the weather is good and you have some spare time. Being located along the highway and railroad that connect Hakodate and Sapporo, you can easily reach Onuma Park as a day trip from Hakodate or you could stop there as you travel north to Sapporo. Onuma Park is home to a picturesque group of large lakes dotted with islands, with the Mt Komagatake volcano not too far in the distance. Small bridges link many of the islands together with the mainland and there are multiple walking trails you can hike to explore the park. You can also rent a pedal boat during the warmer months if you feel like going out onto the water. For the full story on my time in Hakodate and my day trip to Onuma Park, see my old travelogue post titled Hakodate: Learning from Mistakes.
