While I was staying in Sapporo I took a train out to the coastal town of Otaru. There’s not too much to see in Otaru but it does have a really photogenic canal area next to the harbor. In the old days ships would unload their cargo onto smaller vessels that would transport the goods to warehouses that lined the canal. When a modern dock was built in Otaru the canal fell into disrepair but in the 1980s the city started to beautify the area and turned it into what we see today. Warehouses were turned into shops and restaurants and the canal is now a pleasant place for a stroll. I walked the entire length of the canal and got some photos as the sun was starting to go down. Then I made my way back to the train station and returned to Sapporo for the night.
