The pension I stayed in while on Rebun Island served me breakfast and dinner each day and let me tell you it was a culinary adventure. Apparently the cooking staff purchase fresh seafood each day from the local fishermen and whatever the ocean delivered that day found its way onto my table, along with standard Japanese food staples such as rice, tofu, and miso soup. Sometimes I wasn’t totally sure what I was eating but I do know that I ate octopus, sea urchin, squid, and various kinds of fish. I unfortunately photographed only one of my meals, though this photo should give you a good idea as to what eating on Rebun Island was like for me. Rice ended up being my best friend since any time I put something in my mouth that tasted weird I could grab a big spoonful of rice and make just about anything palatable.
