Busan 2019: Dongbaekseom Island (해운대 동백섬)

When I reached the west end of Haeundae Beach I arrived at Dongbaekseom Island. The name Dongbaekseom translates to “Camellias Island” (camellias is a type of flower) and although Dongbaekseom is actually a peninsula it is still referred to as an island because it used to be separate from the mainland in years past. There’s a walking path that goes all the way around the peninsula and while on that path I got a few photos looking back at Haeundae. On the east side of the peninsula you can find a bronze statue of a mermaid sitting on the rocks and holding an orb. The last time I had seen a mermaid statue was the more famous one in Copenhagen, though I think the Busan mermaid statue is a little bigger.

At the southern tip of Dongbaekseom there’s a lighthouse with some nice views looking west towards the area by Diamond Bridge and Gwangalli Beach.

I finished my loop around Dongbaekseom and eventually made my way back to Haeundae Beach. A few hours later I’d be back at Dongbaekseom to capture some nighttime photos of Busan, which I’ll be publishing tomorrow.
